When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer?
One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is:
“When should we book our newborn photographer?”
The short answer is sooner than most people think.
Many families assume they need to wait until their baby arrives before reaching out. In reality, the best time to reserve your newborn photographer is during your second trimester.
Booking early allows you to secure availability, plan your session in advance, and enjoy peace of mind knowing one more item has been checked off your growing to-do list.
Why Book During Pregnancy?
Newborn photographers don’t schedule sessions based on a baby’s exact birth date.
Since babies rarely arrive precisely on their due date, most newborn photographers reserve space around your estimated due date and then finalize the session once your baby arrives.
Because I accept a limited number of newborn sessions each month, booking during pregnancy helps ensure I can accommodate your family when your baby makes their debut.
For most families, I recommend reaching out between 20 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
When Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken?
Most newborn sessions take place within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.
During this stage, babies are often sleepier, naturally curled, and more comfortable settling into the gentle poses commonly associated with newborn photography.
That said, beautiful newborn portraits can still be created beyond the two-week mark. Every baby is different, and my approach is always centered around your baby’s comfort rather than a rigid timeline.
What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
This is one of the biggest concerns parents have—and thankfully, it’s completely normal.
When you reserve your session during pregnancy, we use your due date as a placeholder on my calendar.
Once your baby arrives, you’ll simply reach out and we’ll select the exact session date based on your baby’s birth and how everyone is doing.
This flexible scheduling process allows me to accommodate early arrivals, late arrivals, and everything in between.
Why Waiting Until After Birth Can Be Risky
Many parents don’t realize how quickly newborn photographers fill their calendars.
If you wait until after delivery to begin your search, you may find that your preferred photographer is already fully booked.
Even if availability remains, waiting until you’re caring for a newborn often means adding one more task to an already busy and emotional season.
Booking ahead allows you to focus on your baby once they arrive rather than scrambling to coordinate portraits.
More Than Just Scheduling a Session
Reserving your newborn photographer early isn’t simply about securing a date.
It’s also about creating a plan.
Before your session, we’ll discuss:

Whenever possible, I do my best to accommodate families who discover me later in their pregnancy or after birth.
While availability may be more limited, beautiful portraits can still be created.
