What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?
If you’re wondering what happens during a newborn photography session, you’re not alone.
For many parents, this is their first experience working with a newborn photographer, and it’s natural to have questions. Will my baby sleep? What if they need to eat? Do I need to clean my house? How long does everything take?
The good news is that your newborn session is designed to be relaxed, guided, and centered around your baby’s needs.
As a Baltimore newborn photographer, I specialize in creating studio-quality newborn portraits in the comfort of your home. My goal is to make the experience as easy as possible for new parents by bringing everything needed for beautiful portraits directly to you.
Before Your Session
Your newborn experience begins before I ever arrive at your home.
Once your session is reserved, we’ll discuss styling, colors, family portraits, and how you hope to enjoy your finished images. Whether you’re dreaming of framed artwork for your nursery, an heirloom album, or a gallery wall for your home, we begin with the end in mind.
This planning allows me to customize your session while ensuring every detail feels cohesive and timeless.

I Bring the Studio to You
One of the biggest differences about my newborn sessions is that you don’t need to leave home.
Rather than packing diaper bags, timing feedings, and loading a days-old baby into the car, you can remain in the comfort of your own space while I bring a professional studio setup directly to you.
I arrive with:
- Professional lighting
- Backdrops and posing equipment
- Wraps and newborn accessories
- Styling pieces for baby
- Everything needed to create studio-quality portraits
Many of the images you see throughout my portfolio were photographed in living rooms, dining rooms, nurseries, and bonus rooms throughout Baltimore and the surrounding areas.
We Follow Your Baby’s Lead
Every newborn session is baby-led.
While I have a plan for the session, your baby ultimately sets the pace. If they need to eat, cuddle, be changed, or simply take a break, we pause.
There is never any pressure to rush.
With over 15 years of experience photographing newborns, I’ve learned that patience is often the key to creating the most beautiful images. My job is to create a calm environment while safely guiding your baby through a variety of poses and setups.
Family and Sibling Portraits
Some of the most treasured images from a newborn session are the ones that include the people who love your baby most.
Parent portraits and family images are typically photographed early in the session. I guide everyone through simple, natural posing so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to stand.
If older siblings are participating, we work at their pace as well. Young children don’t need to sit perfectly still or smile on command to create meaningful portraits. Some of my favorite sibling images come from simple moments of connection.

Wrapped and Unwrapped Portraits
Most newborn sessions include a variety of looks.
We often begin with wrapped portraits because many babies feel secure and comfortable while swaddled. As your baby settles into the session, we may move into additional poses and setups depending on their comfort level.
Every baby is different.
Some sleep through the entire session. Others prefer to spend part of the session awake and observing their surroundings. Both are perfectly normal and can result in beautiful images.
Safety Always Comes First
As adorable as newborn portraits are, safety is always my top priority.
Every pose, transition, and setup is approached with your baby’s comfort and well-being in mind. I never force a pose, rush a baby, or prioritize a photograph over safety.
As a trained newborn photographer with over 15 years of experience, I understand how to safely pose and handle newborns throughout the session.

There Is Plenty of Time
One of the most common concerns I hear from parents is:
“What if my baby doesn’t cooperate?”
The truth is that newborn sessions are intentionally unhurried.
There is time for:
- Feeding breaks
- Diaper changes
- Soothing
- Cuddles
- Settling your baby
The session is designed around your newborn, not a rigid timeline.
After Your Session
Once your portraits have been carefully selected and artistically edited, we’ll meet for your ordering appointment.
During this appointment, you’ll view your images and choose the portraits that best fit your family and home.
One of my favorite parts of the process is helping families visualize their artwork before they order. Using photographs of your walls, I can create digital previews showing exactly how framed artwork or gallery collections will look in your space.
This allows you to make confident decisions and invest in pieces you’ll enjoy every day.
A Calm, Guided Experience for Growing Families
The newborn stage is beautiful, emotional, and incredibly brief.
My goal is to make documenting this season feel simple by bringing the studio to you, guiding you through every step, and creating artwork that allows you to remember these early days long after they have passed.
