How to Prepare for Newborn Photography Session: A Complete Guide for New Parents
Bringing home a new baby is exciting, emotional, and often a little overwhelming. Between late-night feedings, diaper changes, pediatrician appointments, and adjusting to life as a family, preparing for a newborn photography session may feel like one more thing to add to an already full list.
The good news is that it shouldn’t.
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that parents are expected to have everything perfectly planned before their session. In reality, an experienced newborn photographer plans the session for you. My goal is to create a calm, enjoyable experience where you can simply focus on your baby while I take care of the details.
For more than 17 years, I’ve photographed newborns in the comfort of their own homes throughout Baltimore, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and the surrounding Maryland communities. Every session is designed to be baby-led, unhurried, and fully guided, so you never have to wonder what comes next.
Whether you’re expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your family, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before your newborn photography session.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?
One of the questions I hear most often is:
“How far in advance should I book?”
The ideal time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester, usually between 20 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Many parents worry because they don’t know exactly when their baby will arrive. Thankfully, you don’t need to know your baby’s birthday when booking. Your due date simply serves as a placeholder on my calendar. Once your little one arrives, we’ll finalize the exact session date based on how everyone is doing.
Booking early gives you the best chance of securing availability, especially since I intentionally accept a limited number of newborn sessions each month. This flexible scheduling allows me to accommodate babies who decide to arrive earlier or later than expected while still giving every family the personalized experience they deserve.
What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?
The ideal window for posed newborn portraits is generally between 5 and 14 days after birth.
During these first two weeks, babies are often:
- Sleepier and easier to settle into gentle poses.
- Naturally curl into the positions they were comfortable in before birth.
- Less aware of their surroundings, making longer stretches of sleep more common.
That said, life doesn’t always go according to plan.
Some babies spend time in the NICU. Others arrive early, need additional medical care, or simply have families who need extra time to recover. If your baby is older than two weeks, don’t assume you’ve missed your opportunity.
I’ve photographed beautiful newborn sessions well beyond the traditional two-week window by adapting the session to your baby’s comfort and developmental stage. Every baby is different, and the goal is never to force poses or rush the experience. Instead, we work with your baby’s unique personality and needs to create timeless images you’ll treasure for years.
If you’re unsure whether it’s too late, reach out anyway. I’d much rather have the conversation and explore your options than have you miss the chance to preserve this fleeting season.
What Happens After You Reserve Your Session?
Many parents wonder what happens between booking and the day I arrive.
Once your session is reserved, you won’t be left to figure everything out on your own.
Together, we’ll discuss:
- Your family’s style and the look you envision for your portraits.
- Wardrobe options for parents, siblings, and baby.
- The colors and overall aesthetic you love.
- Which family members or pets you’d like to include.
- Any questions or concerns you may have before your session.
As your due date approaches, we’ll stay in touch so I can adjust your tentative session date if needed. Once your baby arrives, you’ll simply let me know, and we’ll schedule your session based on both your recovery and your baby’s needs.
My goal is to remove as much stress as possible so that by the time I arrive at your home, you can simply relax and enjoy the experience, knowing every detail has already been thoughtfully planned.
You Don’t Need a Picture-Perfect Home
One of the biggest worries parents share before an in-home newborn session has nothing to do with their baby.
It’s their house.
Many families apologize before I even arrive.
“Our home is a mess.”
“We haven’t unpacked the nursery yet.”
“The living room is full of baby gifts.”
“I wish I had more natural light.”
If you’ve had those thoughts, you’re not aloneโand you can let them go.
Your home does not need to look like it belongs in a magazine for us to create beautiful portraits.
I Bring the Studio to You
Unlike photographers who rely on large windows or specific rooms with natural light, I bring professional studio lighting, backdrops, posing equipment, wraps, blankets, and everything needed to create timeless newborn portraits right inside your home.
Because I create the light myself, I’m not dependent on:
- Large windows
- Perfect weather
- A sunny nursery
- The direction your home faces
- The time of day
Whether your home is bright and open or cozy with smaller rooms, I can create the same soft, consistent lighting that defines my style.
You Only Need a Small Space
Another surprise for many parents is just how little room I actually need.
I can usually create an entire newborn studio in a space that’s only a few feet wide. A corner of the living room, the nursery, or even a dining room often works beautifully.
If needed, I’ll gently move a chair or small piece of furniture to create the perfect setup, and before I leave, everything goes right back where it belongs.
Clients are often amazed at how such a small space can become a professional portrait studio.
Skip the Deep Cleaning
Please don’t spend days scrubbing your house before your session.
The first weeks with a newborn are exhausting. Your energy is much better spent resting, feeding your baby, and enjoying these first precious days together.
A quick pickup of everyday clutter in the room we’ll be using is more than enough.
Things like:
- Laundry baskets
- Phone chargers
- Water bottles
- Tissue boxes
- Extra blankets
- Shopping bags
can simply be moved to another room if you’d like.
Everything else tends to disappear behind the backdrop or outside the frame.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect.
It simply needs to be where your family feels comfortable.
Keep the House Warm
Newborns are happiest when they’re warm and cozy.
Since babies are often photographed wearing simple wraps or very little clothing, I recommend raising your home’s temperature to around 78โ80ยฐF (26โ27ยฐC) about 30 minutes before I arrive.
While it may feel a little warm to the adults, your baby will be much more comfortable, making it easier for them to stay sleepy and relaxed throughout the session.
If you’re recovering postpartum, don’t worry. We can always adjust as needed, and I also bring equipment to help keep baby comfortable during individual portraits.
RelaxโI’ve Done This Hundreds of Times
One of the greatest advantages of working with an experienced newborn photographer is knowing you don’t have to solve every problem before the session begins.
If your nursery isn’t finished yet, that’s okay.
If your living room is the only space with enough room, that’s okay.
If your baby had a rough night and everyone is running on very little sleep, that’s okay too.
I’ve photographed newborns in apartments, townhomes, historic row houses, new construction homes, and everything in between.
Every family’s home is different, but my approach remains the same: create a calm, comfortable environment where your baby can be photographed safely and beautifully.
My job isn’t to judge your home.
It’s to create artwork that tells the story of this incredible season of your family’s life.
What to Wear for Your Newborn Photography Session
One of the most common questions parents ask is, “What should we wear?”
The good news is that you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
Choosing outfits isn’t about following the latest fashion trends or buying something you’ll only wear once. Instead, it’s about selecting clothing that feels comfortable, photographs beautifully, and keeps the focus where it belongsโon your family’s connection.
Before your session, I’ll help guide you through wardrobe selections so everything feels cohesive without looking overly matched.
For Mom
The weeks after giving birth are a time of incredible change, both physically and emotionally. The last thing I want is for you to spend your session worrying about your outfit.
I generally recommend dresses because they photograph beautifully, create elegant movement, and flatter a variety of postpartum body types. Flowing fabrics and subtle textures add softness to portraits while allowing you to move comfortably as you hold and cuddle your baby.
When choosing a dress, look for:
- Soft, flowing fabrics
- Neutral or muted colors
- Simple necklines
- Sleeves if you prefer a little extra coverage
- Minimal patterns
Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel confident. Your comfort will always photograph better than following a trend.
For Dad
Dads don’t need to overthink their wardrobe either.
Classic, timeless clothing almost always photographs best. Neutral button-down shirts, Henleys, lightweight sweaters, polos, or well-fitted solid-colored shirts pair beautifully with chinos or dark denim.
Avoid clothing with:
- Large logos
- Graphic prints
- Neon colors
- Busy patterns
- Athletic wear
Simple clothing keeps the attention on your family rather than your wardrobe.
Dressing Older Siblings
Children photograph best when they’re comfortable.
Simple dresses, knit sweaters, rompers, bloomers, or classic button-up shirts create a timeless look that complements newborn portraits beautifully.
If possible, skip clothing with:
- Character graphics
- Bright colors
- Large logos
- Sequins
- Distracting patterns
Bare feet are often my favorite finishing touch because they create a soft, natural feel that never goes out of style.
What Should Baby Wear?
One of the biggest surprises for many parents is that you don’t need to purchase anything special for your newborn.
I provide a carefully curated collection of wraps, blankets, bonnets, headbands, and newborn outfits that have been selected specifically for timeless newborn portraiture.
These pieces are chosen because they photograph beautifully and coordinate seamlessly with the overall style of your session.
If there’s a sentimental outfit or heirloom item you’d like to include, I’d be honored to incorporate it whenever possible.
Choosing Colors That Stand the Test of Time
When selecting clothing, think about creating a color palette rather than matching everyone in identical outfits.
Soft neutrals and muted tones tend to photograph beautifully because they allow your family’s expressions and connection to become the focus of the image.
Some favorite color palettes include:
- Cream, ivory, oatmeal, and soft beige
- Taupe, camel, and warm browns
- Sage, olive, and muted greens
- Dusty blue and soft slate
- Blush and muted mauve
- Charcoal paired with lighter neutral tones
These colors work together naturally, creating portraits that feel refined today and just as beautiful decades from now.
Jewelry, Hair, and Finishing Touches
Small details can make a meaningful difference.
Simple jewelry, natural makeup, freshly groomed nails, and neatly styled hair help create a polished look without feeling overly formal.
For dads, a quick trim or shave before the session can make a subtle but noticeable difference.
These aren’t about perfectionโthey’re simply small touches that help create portraits you’ll be proud to display in your home for generations.
Don’t WorryโI’ll Help You Every Step of the Way
You don’t have to wonder whether your outfits coordinate or spend hours scrolling online looking for inspiration.
Before your session, I’ll work with you to help select clothing that complements your family’s style while creating the timeless, heirloom-quality portraits you’re envisioning.
One of the benefits of a fully guided experience is knowing you never have to make these decisions alone.
How to Prepare Your Baby for the Session
One of the biggest concerns new parents have is whether their baby will sleep through the session.
The truth is, every baby is different.
Some babies sleep almost the entire time, while others need extra cuddles, feeding breaks, or simply a little more time to settle. That’s completely normal.
My sessions are never rushed. Instead of expecting your baby to fit into a strict schedule, I work around their needs. The result is a relaxed experience that keeps your baby’s comfort and safety at the center of every decision.
While you don’t need to worry about creating the “perfect” baby before I arrive, there are a few simple things that can help your little one feel comfortable.
Try to Keep Baby Awake Before the Session
If possible, try to keep your baby awake for an hour or so before I arrive.
A warm bath, gentle conversation, tummy time (if appropriate), or simply interacting with your baby can help them stay awake just long enough to encourage a deeper sleep once the session begins.
Don’t stress if they sneak in a nap anyway. Babies have their own plans, and that’s perfectly okay.
Feed Baby Shortly Before We Begin
A full baby is usually a happy baby.
If possible, plan to feed your baby just before we begin photographing. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or doing a combination of both, a full tummy often helps babies feel relaxed and sleepy.
If your baby needs to eat several times during the session, that’s expected.
We’ll simply pause whenever they’re hungry.
Some of the sweetest moments happen during these quiet feeding breaks, and I intentionally build plenty of time into every session so no one feels rushed.
Dress Baby in Loose Clothing
Before the session, dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing that opens in the front whenever possible.
Footed sleepers with snaps or zippers are ideal because they’re easy to remove without disturbing a sleepy baby.
Loose clothing also helps reduce temporary marks on your baby’s delicate skin, making the transition into wraps and outfits much smoother.
A Pacifier Can Be HelpfulโEven If Baby Doesn’t Normally Use One
Some parents are surprised when I ask if they have a pacifier available.
Even if your baby doesn’t regularly use one, having one nearby can sometimes help soothe them between poses for just a few moments.
If you don’t plan to use a pacifier, that’s completely okay too. We’ll simply use other calming techniques that work best for your baby.
Accidents Are Part of Newborn Photography
Let’s talk about something every newborn photographer expects…
Babies pee.
They poop.
They spit up.
Sometimes all three happen within a few minutes.
Please don’t feel embarrassed if it happens during your session.
I’ve been photographing newborns since 2009, and I promise your baby won’t do anything I haven’t seen before.
Every blanket, wrap, and outfit is washed after each session, and I always bring extras so we can simply swap them out and continue photographing without missing a beat.
Flexibility Creates the Best Portraits
The most beautiful newborn sessions aren’t the ones where everything goes exactly according to plan.
They’re the ones where everyone slows down and follows the baby’s lead.
If your baby needs extra cuddles, we’ll pause.
If they need another feeding, we’ll pause.
If they simply want to be held for a few minutes, that’s okay too.
Some of the most meaningful photographs happen in those unscripted moments when parents are simply loving on their new baby.
My job isn’t to force a timeline.
It’s to create a calm environment where your baby feels safe, your family feels relaxed, and beautiful memories unfold naturally.
What to Expect During Your Newborn Photography Session
Many parents are surprised by how peaceful a newborn session feels.
Unlike a typical family photo session where everyone is constantly moving from one location to another, newborn sessions are intentionally slow and unhurried.
When I arrive, I’ll begin by setting up my professional lighting, backdrop, and posing equipment. While I prepare everything, you can continue feeding your baby, finish getting dressed, or simply enjoy a quiet moment with your family.
Once everything is ready, we’ll begin with your baby’s comfort in mind.
Throughout the session, we’ll pause whenever your baby needs to:
- Eat
- Be changed
- Be soothed
- Be cuddled
- Stretch
- Simply take a break
There is never any pressure to rush.
Every pose is done gently, every transition is slow, and every decision is based on what your baby is comfortable doing that day.
We’ll also create a beautiful variety of images, including:
- Individual newborn portraits
- Parent and baby portraits
- Sibling portraits
- The entire family together
- Close-up details of tiny fingers, toes, eyelashes, and all the little features that change so quickly during these first weeks of life
By the end of the session, you’ll likely realize something many parents tell me afterward:
“That was so much easier than I expected.”
And that’s exactly how it should feel.
What You Don’t Need to Buy
As new parents, it’s easy to feel like you need one more thing before your baby’s session.
The reality is that you probably already have everything you need.
One of the benefits of choosing a fully guided newborn photography experience is that I provide nearly everything required to create timeless portraits.
That includes a carefully curated collection of:
- Soft wraps and swaddles
- Neutral blankets and layering fabrics
- Newborn outfits
- Bonnets and headbands
- Simple props
- Professional lighting
- Backdrops and posing equipment
Every item has been selected to complement my timeless, heirloom style and is professionally cleaned after every session.
If you have a meaningful heirloom, special blanket, military item, family Bible, or another sentimental piece you’d like to include, I’d be happy to incorporate it whenever it’s safe and appropriate. Those personal touches often become some of the most meaningful portraits in your gallery.
Beyond that, there is nothing you need to purchase specifically for your session.
Your job is simply to love your baby.
I’ll take care of the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my baby won’t sleep?
Don’t worry.
While sleepy babies often allow for a wider variety of posed portraits, awake babies can create beautiful images as well. I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns over the past 17 years, and every session is adapted to your baby’s personality and comfort level.
What if my baby cries during the session?
Crying is completely normal.
We’ll pause whenever your baby needs to eat, cuddle, or simply be comforted. Newborn sessions are intentionally baby-led, so there’s never any pressure to keep going if your little one needs a break.
What if I’m recovering from a C-section?
Your recovery always comes first.
One of the biggest advantages of an in-home session is that you don’t have to pack the car, drive anywhere, or spend hours away from home. You can sit comfortably, rest when needed, and focus on enjoying your new baby while I do the work.
Can grandparents be included?
Absolutely.
If grandparents are an important part of your family’s story, they’re welcome to join the session. Just let me know during the planning process so we can allow time for those portraits.
Can we include our dog?
In many cases, yes.
Pets are family too, and they can often be included for a few meaningful portraits. We’ll discuss your pet’s personality beforehand to make sure it’s a safe and enjoyable experience for everyoneโespecially your baby.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
That’s exactly why I schedule newborn sessions around your due date rather than a fixed calendar date.
Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the best day for your session based on your baby’s birth date, your recovery, and availability.
Is it ever too late for newborn photos?
Not necessarily.
While the first two weeks are ideal for traditional posed newborn portraits, beautiful images can still be created with older babies.
If your baby is already a few weeks old, don’t assume you’ve missed your chance. Reach out, and we’ll talk through your options.
How long does a newborn photography session take?
Most sessions last approximately two to three hours.
That allows plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, outfit changes, and creating a beautiful variety of portraits without ever feeling rushed.
Your Baby Will Only Be This Little Once
The newborn stage passes more quickly than most parents expect.
Tiny fingers begin to stretch.
Sleepy yawns become curious expressions.
The way your baby naturally fits in your arms changes almost before you’ve had time to take it all in.
These first days are beautifully ordinary while you’re living them, yet they’re often the moments parents wish they could revisit years later.
My goal isn’t simply to create beautiful photographs.
It’s to preserve the feeling of this seasonโthe overwhelming love, the quiet moments, and the tiny details that become some of your family’s most treasured memories.
From the moment you reach out to the final artwork hanging on your walls, every step of the experience is thoughtfully designed to be calm, personal, and completely guided.
You don’t have to know how to pose.
You don’t need a perfectly clean home.
You don’t need to buy special props or outfits.
You simply need to show up as a family.
I’ll take care of the rest.
If you’re expecting and would like to learn more about an in-home newborn photography experience, I’d love to help you preserve this incredible chapter of your family’s story.
