Interview with a Prenatal Yoga Instructor: Discover the Surprising Benefits of Prenatal Yoga
Pregnancy is such a beautiful season, but it also comes with its share of changes—physically, emotionally, and even energetically. That’s where prenatal yoga can make a powerful difference. More than simple stretching, prenatal yoga nurtures both mother and baby by easing discomfort, reducing stress, improving sleep, and helping you feel more connected to your body and little one.
As a DMV maternity photographer, I love connecting expecting moms with resources that support them during this transformative time. That’s why I sat down with Jessie Kates of Shift Yoga & Strength, a prenatal yoga instructor in the DMV, to talk about the real benefits of the practice, common myths, and how it can help in every stage of pregnancy (and even postpartum). Jessie shared so many insights—from little-known benefits like better circulation and hormonal balance to practical tips you can use right away.
If you’re curious about how prenatal yoga can support you in pregnancy and beyond, you won’t want to miss Jessie’s advice in the Q&A below.
What exactly is prenatal yoga, and how does it nurture both mother and baby?
Prenatal yoga is a deeply intentional practice that supports the physical, emotional, and energetic
shifts of pregnancy. It goes beyond just modifying traditional yoga poses for a growing belly—
it’s about tuning in to the wisdom of the body, learning to soften into change, and building
strength where it’s needed most.
For the baby, this practice fosters a sense of calm and connection. When a birthing person slows
their breath, grounds their body, and practices mindful movement, it sends a powerful signal of
safety and regulation to the nervous system—something that benefits both mother and baby long
after class ends.
Could you highlight some unique benefits of prenatal yoga that aren’t commonly known?
Most people know prenatal yoga can help with back pain and flexibility, but there’s so much
more to it. One lesser-known benefit is how it helps improve circulation and lymphatic flow,
which can reduce swelling and fatigue. Another powerful benefit is nervous system regulation—
through breath and movement, we practice tools that support better sleep, reduce anxiety, and
promote hormonal balance.
Prenatal yoga also builds community. When you’re surrounded by other pregnant people who are
navigating the same big emotions, physical changes, and questions—it’s a reminder that you’re
not alone. That sense of belonging can be incredibly healing.
Are there any myths about prenatal yoga that you’d like to debunk?
Absolutely. One common myth is that prenatal yoga is “just gentle stretching.” While we do use
props and intentional modifications, prenatal yoga is also about building strength, stamina, and
resilience—qualities that serve you in birth and beyond.
Another myth? That you have to already be “fit” or flexible to start. You don’t. Our classes are
designed to meet you exactly where you are, whether you’re brand new to movement or already
an athlete. Pregnancy is the perfect time to get curious, listen to your body, and explore what
movement feels nourishing—not performative.
How do yoga practices vary across the different stages of pregnancy, and why?
Each trimester brings its own invitations, and we adjust practice to reflect that.
In the first trimester, we prioritize rest, breath, and grounding as the body works overtime to
grow new life—often behind the scenes. Movement here is supportive, not strenuous.
The second trimester often brings more energy and space, so we build strength, pelvic stability,
and stamina while still honoring rest.
By the third trimester, we begin to prepare for birth—focusing on positions that support pelvic
alignment, hip mobility, and tools for coping with discomfort. We also integrate breathwork and
visualization to build confidence for labor.
The guiding question is always: What does your body need today?
How do you cater to diverse fitness levels and health conditions in your prenatal classes?
We approach every class with flexibility, offering multiple variations and prop options so
students can honor what feels best for their body. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all practice
—especially during pregnancy.
We also take time to check in with students before class, learn about any conditions like pelvic
pain, sciatica, or fatigue, and adjust sequences accordingly. Our goal is to create a space that
feels empowering and accessible—where each student feels seen and supported.
In what ways does prenatal yoga offer postpartum benefits?
The benefits ripple well beyond birth. Breathwork and mindfulness tools learned during
pregnancy become essential during postpartum—the 2am feedings, the identity shifts, the big
emotions.
Physically, prenatal yoga lays the foundation for a safe return to movement. We focus on
stabilizing the core, protecting the pelvic floor, and cultivating awareness of posture and breath,
all of which support postpartum recovery.
But most importantly, prenatal yoga helps you trust your body. That inner trust can be the most
powerful postpartum tool of all.
