How to Choose the Right Newborn Photographer for Your Family
If you’re expecting a baby, you’ve probably started thinking about how quickly those first days will pass. Newborn photography allows you to preserve this fleeting season, but many parents have questions before booking a session.
As a Baltimore newborn photographer specializing in studio-quality portraits created in the comfort of your home, I believe parents should feel informed and confident before making a decision. Here are answers to some of the most common questions I receive.
What Should I Look for When Hiring a Newborn Photographer?
Newborn photography is one of the most specialized areas of portrait photography. Beyond creating beautiful images, your photographer should have extensive experience handling and posing newborns safely.
When researching photographers, look for someone who:
- Specializes in newborn photography
- Has experience safely working with infants
- Provides a consistent style you love
- Clearly explains their process
- Makes safety a priority
With over 15 years of experience photographing newborns, I have developed a baby-led approach that prioritizes comfort, patience, and safety while creating timeless portraits for families throughout Baltimore and the surrounding areas.
What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?
One of the biggest surprises for parents is how relaxed a newborn session can be.
Before your session, we’ll plan every detail together, including colors, styling, family portraits, and how you’d like to display your images in your home.
On session day, I bring a studio-quality setup directly to you, including professional lighting, backdrops, wraps, and carefully selected newborn accessories. There is no need to pack a diaper bag, load the car, or leave the house with a days-old baby.
Sessions move at your baby’s pace. We allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, cuddling, and breaks whenever needed. Family and sibling portraits are also incorporated naturally throughout the session.
When Should I Book My Newborn Photographer?
The best time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester.
Because I accept a limited number of newborn sessions each month, booking early ensures availability around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we’ll finalize the exact session date.
Most newborn portraits are photographed within the first 5 to 14 days after birth, when babies are typically sleepiest and most comfortable in curled poses.
Do I Need to Provide Anything?
One of the advantages of my full-service experience is that most families don’t need to provide anything at all.
I bring:
- Professional studio lighting
- Backdrops and posing equipment
- Wraps, blankets, and newborn accessories
- Wardrobe options for baby
- Guidance for family styling
If you have a sentimental item you’d like included, such as a special blanket, heirloom, or meaningful keepsake, I am happy to incorporate it into your session.
When Will I See My Photos?
Approximately two to three weeks after your session, we’ll meet for your ordering appointment.
During this appointment, you’ll view your finished images and receive guidance selecting your favorites. We’ll also discuss artwork options for your home, including albums, wall portraits, and heirloom pieces designed to be enjoyed for generations.
One of my favorite parts of the process is helping families visualize their artwork before ordering. Using photographs of your walls, I can create digital previews so you can see exactly how your finished portraits will look in your home.
How Much Does Newborn Photography Cost?
Newborn photography is an investment in preserving a season that passes remarkably quickly.
Most families invest between $3,000 and $6,000 on their completed portrait experience and artwork. Every collection is designed to provide not only beautiful images but tangible pieces that can be enjoyed every day rather than remaining stored on a hard drive.
My goal is to make the process simple, guided, and enjoyable from beginning to end, so you can focus on your growing family while I take care of the details.
