What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?

One of the most common questions new parents ask is:

“When is the best age for newborn photos?”

The short answer is that most newborn photographers recommend scheduling your session when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old.

During these first two weeks, babies are often sleepier, naturally curled, and more comfortable settling into the gentle poses commonly associated with newborn photography.

However, if your baby is older than two weeks, don’t worry. Beautiful newborn portraits are still absolutely possible.

Why Are Newborn Photos Typically Taken Within the First Two Weeks?

During the first 5 to 14 days after birth, babies tend to:

  • Sleep more deeply
  • Remain naturally curled from their time in the womb
  • Be easier to soothe between poses
  • Transition more smoothly between setups

This stage often allows photographers to create the sleepy, peaceful newborn portraits many parents envision when planning their session.

That said, every baby is unique. Some newborns are naturally sleepy, while others are curious and alert from the very beginning.

What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?

Many parents worry they’ve missed their opportunity if life becomes busy after delivery.

The good news is that newborn photography doesn’t suddenly stop working after day fourteen.

Babies who are two, three, or even four weeks old can still be beautifully photographed.

In fact, older newborns often provide something different:

  • More eye contact
  • Curious expressions
  • Stretching and movement
  • Early glimpses of personality

While the images may look slightly different than those of a week-old baby, they can be just as meaningful.

What If My Baby Spent Time in the NICU?

Families whose babies spend time in the NICU often worry they have missed the “ideal” window for newborn portraits.

Please know that there is no need to add additional stress during an already emotional time.

Many NICU graduates are photographed after they come home and are healthy enough for a session. The most important thing is your baby’s well-being—not meeting an arbitrary deadline.

Beautiful portraits can be created whenever your baby is ready.

Every Baby Is Different

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that every baby behaves the same way.

They don’t.

Some babies sleep through the entire session. Others prefer to spend portions of the session awake and observing the world around them.

My approach is always baby-led, meaning your baby’s comfort determines the pace of the session rather than a strict shot list.

Planning Ahead Is Still Important

Although newborn portraits can be created at a variety of ages, it’s still best to reserve your photographer during pregnancy.

Most photographers accept a limited number of newborn sessions each month and schedule based on your due date rather than your baby’s actual birthday.

The Best Age Is the Age You Have

Parents often feel pressure to schedule newborn photos at the “perfect” time.

While the first two weeks are often ideal for traditional newborn portraits, the truth is that every stage of your baby’s early life is worth documenting.

Whether your baby is 7 days old, 17 days old, or 7 weeks old, these moments pass quickly.

The most important thing is not capturing your baby at the perfect age—it’s making sure these memories are preserved before they become memories.
